The Dream Café

Information about this organisation

Throughout our lives, we as human beings are constantly interpreting our perceptions and attributing meaning to what we experience. This often happens unconsciously. Our thoughts, beliefs and reactions are influenced by past experiences and the strategies we have developed to cope with the world around us. As a result, we do not live solely in our own minds, but are constantly interacting with our surroundings.
Nevertheless, one might wonder whether this does not already contain an initial fallacy. After all, the philosopher René Descartes stated: "Cogito, ergo sum" – "I think, therefore I am." Based on this idea, one could argue that it is precisely thought – both conscious and unconscious – that forms the basis of our existence and our perception of reality.
This simple example shows that philosophy is not just for scientists or academics. In a sense, everyone is already engaging in philosophy. People reflect on their experiences, question their choices and seek meaning in their lives. That is precisely why philosophy need not be complicated or inaccessible at all.
However, the true power of philosophy emerges when this way of thinking becomes conscious. Philosophy offers not only a way of looking at oneself, but also a way of better understanding the world. It helps people to grow, discover new perspectives and critically examine existing beliefs.
When people from different backgrounds, with different experiences and beliefs, come together, something special happens. By engaging in dialogue with one another, they not only discover new ideas, but also new ways of looking at their own experiences. People become wiser by learning to listen to the meaning others attach to the same reality.
As a result, not only does the individual develop, but a community open to new insights also emerges. After all, philosophy has no absolute winners or losers. It is all about exploring ideas, asking questions and seeking understanding together. That is precisely why philosophy provides an ideal basis for bringing people together.
It was with this in mind that the concept of the Droom Café was born. In this proposal, I would like to explain why I believe the Droom Café could be a valuable addition to our local community and should therefore be taken seriously.
I believe that this accessible form of philosophical engagement is well worth the investment. It offers residents an active opportunity to contribute their thoughts, exchange ideas and develop themselves. Not only on classic philosophical themes such as existence, knowledge, morality and reality, but also on current social issues that affect us all.
The ultimate aim of this concept is therefore not to generate financial profit. It aims for something that may prove even more valuable in the long term: the accumulation of knowledge, insights and human experiences. By bringing people together and encouraging them to engage in dialogue, an environment is created in which new ideas can flourish and in which both the individual and the community can develop further.
