Open Church

Do you enjoy welcoming people and telling them about a special place in Leeuwarden? If so, we’re looking for you!

The Grote Kerk Leeuwarden / Stadsklooster Leeuwarden is a special place right in the heart of the city. Every day, volunteers open the church’s doors to visitors from Leeuwarden, the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

For our Open Church Group, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who would enjoy welcoming visitors as hosts or hostesses.

What will you do?
As a volunteer with the Open Church Group, you’ll be one of the first people visitors see when they enter the church. You’ll make sure people feel welcome and at ease.

Your duties may include, amongst other things:

• To welcome visitors warmly and show them around the church.
• Have a chat and answer visitors’ questions.
• Tell us a little about the history and special features of the church.
• If that’s something you enjoy: giving guided tours to visitors.
• Visitors draw attention to activities, exhibitions or other points of interest in the church.
• Keep an eye on things and help to create a pleasant atmosphere in the building.

You don’t need to have in-depth knowledge of the history of the church. We consider enthusiasm, a welcoming attitude and an interest in people to be far more important. Of course, we’ll help you get started, and you can learn more and more about the church and its history as you go along.

As a volunteer with the Open Church Group:

• Become part of a dedicated and friendly group of volunteers.
• You’ll meet new and interesting people every day.
• Will you help to contribute to the Grote Kerk’s welcoming atmosphere and ambience?.
• You’ll have the chance to learn more about the history and significance of the church.
• You’ll have a rewarding and varied role in a beautiful location in the heart of Leeuwarden.

You are the face of the church. Through your presence, enthusiasm and hospitality, you ensure that visitors not only see a beautiful church, but also feel genuinely welcome.

We are looking for people who:

• I’d like to get to know different kinds of people.
• Be welcoming and friendly.
• Enjoying telling stories and answering questions.
• Being able to work independently, but also enjoying being part of a group of volunteers.
• An affinity with the Grote Kerk, the history of Leeuwarden, culture, heritage or simply hospitality.
• Be available for a few hours a week or a month.

No experience is necessary. Whether you’re retired, a student, in work or simply keen to make a difference to the city: you’re very welcome!
