Discussion leader support group
Description
The Depression Association brings together people who have experienced depression (or several). We also call this 'fellow sufferers'. To fellow sufferers, we offer the opportunity to share experiences among themselves.
What is a support group?
A support group is a form of self-help. Such a group consists of about eight people who have, or have had, depression. They meet twice a month to exchange experiences and discuss how they cope with their depression in daily life and what they encounter. Anything to do with depression can be discussed in these groups.
To guide a group well, it is necessary that you are able to use your own experience, but not see it as a guide for others. You are able to rise above your own experience of depression. You are able to give participants space to find their own way. This makes every participant feel accepted.
What does the organisation offer the volunteer?
You will receive a 2-day training for conversation facilitators (GBs) in Utrecht. Here you will learn more about support groups and the manual for GBs. We also practice some cases.
You will also take an online training course from 113. After the training, you will receive a volunteer contract.
You will work in a group with a fellow interviewer.
Your regional coordinator provides support during start-up and for any questions or problems that arise in the group.
The regional coordinator also provides peer review with you and other interviewers.
What does the organisation ask of the volunteer?
* A warm personality and genuine interest in others. Being able to sense people and put them at ease.
* Be flexible, meetings may go differently than you planned in advance.
* You live in the area. The group is always held at the same location on a fixed evening in the month. If you live outside Leeuwarden, your travel expenses will be reimbursed.
* Availability of a time commitment of about 5 hours per month for a longer period (at least a year), given the nature of the group. Continuity is important, the better the group members get to know each other the better the sharing of experiences leads to recognition and acknowledgement.
