Good contact
In conversation with the other person, as a volunteer, you offer empathy, a listening ear, attention and recognition. Building a good contact is about finding the right frequency to understand each other. You look at the other person with attention so that you make space for mutual trust and connection. Only when you really tune in will you have a genuine contact and be able to mean something to the other person.
What is important in a ‘good’ relationship?
Conversational skills such as asking questions, probing further, listening reflectively, distinguishing between facts and one’s own judgements and interpretations, and being able to avoid taking things for granted.
Attitudinal aspects of building a relationship of trust: the ability to empathise, dealing with the other person’s emotions, and responding to their needs in the moment.
An understanding of your own strengths and pitfalls when communicating with others.
