Listening ear telephone helpline

Description

The Listening Line is there for anyone in need of a conversation. The calls are anonymous and confidential. People can call from their own familiar surroundings at the time of need.

In a conversation, the caller is given time and opportunity to draw attention to his or her problem. This may involve (sometimes seemingly) small sadnesses, but also profound life questions. The topics that come up during the calls are very diverse: loneliness, birth of a child, grieving, relational problems, health, sexual violence, domestic violence, dejection.

A conversation can give people just that boost they need to move forward on their own.

The Listening Line is looking for volunteers to occupy the phone on a rota basis to speak to people in need of a face-to-face conversation. In some conversations, listening is enough. In other cases, you try to clarify the problem together with the caller and explore possible alternatives. If necessary, you will refer them to other help agencies and/or helplines.

Volunteers at the Listening Line receive basic training with SPEN certificate and proper guidance through coaching and peer supervision.

Volunteering at the Listening Line is meaningful and engaging voluntary work that also contributes to your personal development. By really listening, you hear more: you learn to listen differently. You work one four-hour shift a week. Once a month, you work a night shift. The night shift naturally demands more of you than a day shift. Yet it is the stories during the night that make this work special.
