Mee Leven self-help group on suicidality

Mee Leven is a self-help group for people who have someone close to them who is dealing with suicidality. Sometimes it happens that you cannot go to a counsellor or someone close to you with your story, your thoughts and your questions. This may be because you don't want to, you don't want to burden your surroundings with what is troubling you. It could also be that you don't get answers to your questions or don't know who to ask. Talking about your neighbour with suicidal thoughts can bring a lot of relief, as can talking about what it does to you. Just being able to talk about what's on your mind with others going through the same thing can be very nice. Meeting people going through the same thing as you can be a relief; you are not the only one going through this. In self-help groups Mee Leven, you will find people going through the same thing as you. Like you, they are looking for recognition and understanding, for tools to deal with the situation. By talking about this together, under the guidance of two experienced group counsellors, we can support each other and help you find those tools and actually use them. The Suicide Prevention Centre Foundation believes that sharing your story, your thoughts and your feelings is just as important for loved ones as it is for someone walking around with suicidal thoughts themselves. As a loved one, you are also dealing with a drastic event; just like someone with suicidal thoughts, as a loved one you are also going through a recovery process. The staff of the Suicide Prevention Centre know from their own experience that talking about your thoughts with someone who has experienced it themselves is very pleasant. It gives recognition, that you are not the only one, and understanding. Someone who has been through it themselves really understands how you feel, what it does to you. He or she may be able to help you by giving tips or tools to help you deal with the situation. The self-help group Mee Leven consists of eight meetings that take place once every fortnight. The first meeting consists of getting to know each other and the group leaders. The topics for the following meetings are decided in consultation with the participants. In one of the meetings, someone who has been dealing with suicidal thoughts and behaviour himself will be invited. A great opportunity to ask, for instance, those questions you don't dare to ask your neighbour.
