Dementia

Many volunteers come into contact with elderly people, and therefore regularly with people dealing with dementia. Dementia is more than just forgetfulness: it is an umbrella term for several conditions in which the brain no longer processes information properly. Understanding and patience are essential.

What can you do as a volunteer?
1. Be calm and clear
Talk slowly, use short sentences and ask one question at a time. Avoid crowds or distractions when explaining something.

2. Show understanding and patience
Don't correct someone unnecessarily. Go with the moment if that is more pleasing to the person than explaining reality.

3. Pay attention to non-verbal cues
People with dementia can sometimes find it difficult to express feelings such as anxiety or frustration. Pay attention to facial expression, body language or agitated behaviour.

4. Build trust
If you have more frequent contact, a regular face can give confidence. Always name who you are and why you are there.

For organisations:
Offer volunteers basic training in 'Dealing with dementia', for example, the free training offered by Alzheimer Nederland and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. And make it a topic of discussion during 1-on-1 meetings with volunteers or during group meetings.
