City of Literature

As UNESCO City of Literature, Leeuwarden and Fryslân want to invest in a professional literary climate, an international network and making literature as accessible as possible (taking low literacy and multilingualism into account, among other things).
When we think of 'literature in Fryslân', we naturally think first and foremost of Frisian-language literature. But it is much more than that. Dutch-language poems, stories and novels also define the history, position and future of our province. And do not forget the authors and poets who write in Bildts, Stellingwerfs or one of the other regional and minority languages that Fryslân is rich in! By emphasising, alongside all this, translations by Fryslân writers and exchanges with other languages and cultures, we underline the open and inclusive character of literature in Fryslân.
