Healthy working environment
Volunteers are indispensable to countless organisations. It is therefore important that they can do their work in an environment that is safe, pleasant and healthy. A healthy working environment goes beyond physical safety. Mental health, social atmosphere and practical support also play a major role.
What is a healthy work environment?
A healthy work environment is a place where volunteers:
- feel safe and valued
- can do their work without undue physical or mental strain
- have clarity on their roles and responsibilities
- get sufficient breaks, support and guidance
What can you do as an organisation?
1. Ensure physical safety
- Good lighting, ventilation and ergonomic workstations.
- Education on safe lifting or handling aids
- First aid kit available
- Providing information on first aid, see here the possibilities
2. Encourage open communication
- Create space for questions, feedback and concerns
- Appoint a point of contact for personal or practical problems
3. Pay attention to mental health
- Discuss regularly how things are going, especially with intensive or emotionally taxing tasks
- Be alert to signs of stress, overwork or fatigue
4. Offer structure and clarity
- Ensure clear terms of reference and realistic expectations
- Provide good guidance at the start as well as during volunteering
5. Invest in atmosphere and appreciation
- Show volunteers that they matter: a thank you, a card or lunch together make a big difference
- Organise team moments and share successes
Tip: Ask volunteers regularly for feedback on their workplace and well-being. A short questionnaire or evaluation interview can already provide many valuable insights.
A good volunteer policy ensures that you safeguard and record the above points. See here information on the volunteer policy.
