Wheelchair bike driver
Description
A little wind through the hair
Everyone has a right to wind through their hair. A less mobile city dweller bound to his wheelchair is taken for a bike ride. A quick look around the old neighbourhood, a lap around the (new) Cambuur stadium, a quick visit to the Condens, a stretch along the Dokkumer Ee. A piece of cycling with the wind through your hair. The contact with people, out and about with a volunteer. A warm-hearted but simple gesture that almost anyone can do. At Cycling All Years, life does not stop at a certain disability or age, but we embrace what each person has to offer through something as simple as cycling. A wheelchair bike driver, or "pilot" as we call it internationally, is a volunteer who is available one half-day a week to go out with the wheelchair bike and one passenger. This person can simply stay in their own wheelchair. More half-days a week is of course always possible. To reassure you: the wheelchair bike is equipped with electric pedal assistance!
Training
As a wheelchair bike pilot, you will receive extensive training from experienced pilots. We guide you well until you go out independently with the people. We have a booking system where we keep track of who cycles where, we have 4 rickshaws & 2 wheelchair bikes at our disposal. Keep the nice weather coming.
What does the organisation offer the volunteer?
Before the pilot starts, you will get training on how to use the bike and we will practice first until you master it. We also focus on interacting with the target group of 'Cycling All Years'. Cycling is not the goal, experiencing something together and going out is paramount.
What does the organisation ask of the volunteer?
You love cycling and people. You have an affinity with disabled or elderly people. You can handle the responsibility of going out with less-mobile fellow townspeople on the wheelchair bike.
